Colonial Williamsburg began extensive, multi-year construction renovation projects in 2000 to enhance the original 1957 Visitor Center complex and two of their five hotels. The projects comprise the largest undertaking of its kind in Colonial Williamsburg’s history and is among the largest capital investments ever made in the Virginia Tidewater region.
The 21,500 SF, renovated and expanded Visitor Center consist of a carefully orchestrated mix of orientation, marketing and interpretive exhibits. In the plaza, visitors encounter a large, bronze tableau of the historic area—their first glimpse of the immense offerings available. Inside, colorful graphics and media presentations are all engineered to accommodate the regular updates anticipated. “Walk Back in Time,” a unique time line spanning the pedestrian bridge to the historic area, entertains visitors while preparing them for their own journey into 18th-century Virginia.
In 2006, The 1717 Design Group was asked by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to transform the CW Visitor Center into the Regional Welcome Center for the Jamestown 2007 celebration. New exhibit components were developed to promote the region’s attractions. Large trilons featuring extensive graphics, video presentations and brochure racks encourage visitors to visit the three primary sites comprising the Historic Triangle — Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. The project included a new gallery dedicated specifically to Colonial Williamsburg offerings and an assortment of new interior and exterior banners and signage.
