Doors opened in 1965 at the Museum’s chosen location atop historic Persimmon Hill in Oklahoma City. Since 1994, the Museum has experienced its own westward expansion, increasing in size from 80,000 SF to more than 200,000 SF. Their extensive collection of western cultural history makes the Museum a must see for those interested in the story of the American West.
Over an eight-year period, 1717 worked closely with the museum staff to plan and design six distinct gallery environments in over 32,000 SF of new and renovated exhibit space created during the $21 million building expansion designed by Denver architects, Fentress, Bradburn Architects. Major interpretive exhibit galleries include The American Cowboy Gallery, The American Rodeo Gallery, The Joe Grandee Museum of the Frontier West Gallery, The Weitzenhoffer Gallery of Fine American Fireams, The Western Performers Gallery and The Children’s Cowboy Corral.
